Artist Statement

I am a printmaker and painter, currently living and working in Massachusetts. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lesley University College of Art and Design.

My work delves into themes of lineage, heritage, and tradition as a way to better understand who I am and where I came from. Each layer of my identity informs and deepens my creative journey.

My travels and immersion in diverse cultures sparked a deeper curiosity about my own cultural roots. Though my family is from Juba, South Sudan, I was born and raised in the United States. This duality forms the foundation of my artistic practice—an ongoing exploration of the disconnect between inherited tradition and lived experience.

I often draw inspiration from personal and familial archives—photographs taken by myself or passed down through generations. These images serve as both reference and relic, allowing me to reconstruct and reimagine the past through my own artistic lens. Through oil painting and printmaking, I aim to capture the spirit of my family members and the cultural landscapes they embody. I intentionally alter these archival images, embedding them with my own visual language to ensure that my voice resonates throughout the work.

This process is not just about preserving memory—it’s about reclaiming and reinterpreting it. Each piece I create is both a tribute to my roots and a reflection of the complexities that come with navigating multiple cultural identities.
